IP stands for Internet Protocol and IP address is the numerical label given to every electronic device like computer or printer that is part of a computer network that utilizes the Internet Protocol for communication. An IP address provides two primary functions: network interface or host recognition and site addressing. The role of the IP address has been indicated as follows:

  • A name shows what we are looking for.
  • An address suggests where it is.
  • A path shows how to get there.

The creators of the Internet Protocol system defined an IP address as a 32 bit number which is also known as Internet Protocol Version 4 or IPv4. This system is still in use as of today. On the other hand, because of the tremendous development of the Internet and the expected exhaustion of available addresses, IPv6 has been introduced which is a newer version of IP that uses 128 bits for the address.

With the growing number of electronic devices that connect to the internet, there is the possibility that IP addresses will soon run out. This is one of the reasons why the IPv6 has been developed.

What is Static and Dynamic IP Address?
